Vespa Since 1955 mug - microwave and dishwasher safe
The story begins in the Italian Pontedera of the late 19th century. There Rinaldo Piaggio started a company for all kinds of means of transport, such as passenger ships and railway wagons. During the First World War, the company started producing airplanes. In 1938 Mr. Piaggio died, leaving his company to his sons. After the outbreak of the Second World War, the company had to focus completely on the production of warplanes for the Italian army, which was an ally of Nazi Germany. When the Allies won the war, they forbade Piaggio to continue producing airplanes.
The Piaggio brothers must have thought at the time, "Shit, what do we do now?!". From that moment on, the company started to focus more on personal means of transport and started the production of scooters. In 1946 this resulted in the very first Vespa. The scooter was designed by Corradino d'Ascanio and was called Vespa, after the Italian word for wasp, because the vehicle looked a bit like it. Probably there were still some aircraft parts in Piaggio's workshop, because these were incorporated in the Vespa 98. How bold: in the first Vespa there was a (modified version of an) aircraft starter motor!
