The Immaculate Heart of Mary, originally the Sacred Heart of Mary, is a devotional name used mainly by Roman Catholics to refer to the physical heart of Mary as a symbol of her inner life: her joys and sorrows, her virtues and hidden perfections and her love. The feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was instituted by Pope Pius XII in 1942 for the whole Church on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the apparitions at Fátima. Before that, the feast was already celebrated locally here and there. This free remembrance was celebrated on 22 August, but after the reform of the liturgical calendar at the end of the 20th century, it was shifted to a date closer to the celebration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: on the Saturday after the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is now celebrated.
