The Siegfriedsage is the first part of the Nibelungenlied. This part is characterised by a fairytale atmosphere.
The young hero Siegfried, from Xanten on the Lower Rhine, has supernatural powers and manages to distinguish himself by killing the dragon Fafnir. He bathes in the dragon's blood, which makes him invulnerable except for a small spot on his back. Siegfried, together with the warriors of Günther, King of the Burgundians, defeats the Saxons on the battlefield. Finally, as a result of love intrigues, Siegfried is murdered by Günther's vassal Hagen by stabbing him in the back in his only weak spot
