Obba (Oba) Nigerian river goddess. She is the patron goddess of pregnancy. She was brought into slavery in Brazil, where she was equated with the Christian Saint Catherine. She is also referred to by the name Oxum. She is the sister of the other river goddesses Oshun and Oya and the daughter of the water goddess Yemanya. Oba is connected to pure water as a symbol of motherhood.
The realm of Oxum is the fresh water, especially the waterfalls, or the calm water of tranquil rivers. Sacrifices are made to her in these places. In this water her sons take ritual baths to gain magical power.
As goddess of pregnancy, she protects people while they are still in the womb and guards them until the first years of life.
Oba also rules the blood; the magical power with which she does this has a golden color. She is fed with honey, which symbolizes white blood. She is the one who holds back menstrual blood during pregnancy.
Oba is the owner of the metals in the earth. She mainly controls gold, silver and copper, and according to her wishes these should be made into jewelry. She is known as a very gentle mother and a kind wife. Her husband is Xango, the god of justice and balance. She shares him with Obum or Oshun and Oya or Yansa. Other orisha are also mentioned as her partner.
