Heimdall or Heimdallr (Hallinskidi, Gullintanni, 'with golden teeth') is the guardian of the gods in Norse mythology. He is the son of nine virgin sisters, daughters of Aegir. Snorri Sturluson names Odin as his father.
Heimdall arises from the foam of the surf. From the mist vapour he creates a connecting arc from Midgard to Asgard, called Bifröst, consisting of vapour and light. Heimdal has the absolute hearing, hears the grass and the wool grow, and blows the Gjallar horn.
As guardian of the gods, Heimdall needs less sleep than a bird. He is able to see a hundred miles by night as well as by day.
