Nicolaus Copernicus figurine Veronese Design

Nicolaus Copernicus was a mathematician and astronomer who developed a heliocentric model of the universe that placed the Sun, instead of the Earth, at the center of the then known planets and fixed stars.

The publication of Copernicus' book, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Bodies), just before his death in 1543, is considered an important moment in the history of science. This began the Copernican Revolution; the book contributed greatly to the scientific revolution.

Copernicus was born and died in Royal Prussia, an autonomous state ruled in personal union by the Polish king since 1466. Copernicus had a doctorate in canon law and was also a physician, polyglot, scholar of classical antiquity, translator, governor, diplomat and economist, but all without a degree. In 1517 he devised a theory of quantity, an important concept in modern economics, even before Gresham formulated a version of Gresham's law in 1519.

The chemical element copernicium, discovered in 1996, is named after him.
