Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) was a German composer, musician, virtuoso and conductor. In his early period, his style directly followed that of Mozart and Haydn, with whom he is considered part of the First Viennese School. He brought classicism to completion and, in his late period, introduced romanticism. He is counted among the most influential composers. His oeuvre had a dominant influence on nineteenth-century music.Beethoven's Fifth Symphony in C minor (Op. 67) was written in Vienna between 1804 and 1808.

Beethoven's Fifth is one of the most popular and well-known compositions in the history of classical music, and also one of the most widely played. It contains several musical forms: a sonata allegro as the opening, an andante and a fast scherzo leading to the finale.

The premiere of this symphony was on 22 December 1808 at the Theater an der Wien, after which it quickly built up its grand reputation. Even at the time, E.T.A. Hoffmann described the symphony as ‘one of the most important works of its time.’
