Ixchel is a Mayan goddess of midwifery, medicine, earth, rain and war. She bears similarities to the Aztec Tocî. In Karl Taube's revised Schellhas-Zimmermann classification of deities, Ixchel corresponds to Goddess O.
In the 16th century, Diego de Landa described Ixchel as the ‘goddess of child-making’. He also called her a goddess of medicine. He took the festival Ihcil Ixchel as an example for this claim. Ihcil Ixchel was celebrated by shamans and doctors. Stones used for divination, medicine and idols of Ixchel played a major role in the Ihcil Ixchel.
Ixchel was known to the Maya before the 16th century. The name Ixchel came into use in Yucatán in the 16th century, by the Poqomchi'. The meaning of the name is not exactly known. It is possible that Ixchel comes from the Yucatan Maya for rainbow (pronounced ‘chel’). The name Itzel comes from Ixchel.
