Hathor ("House of Hor(us)") is a mother goddess in Egyptian mythology, called "mother of mothers" and "mother of gods". She is both the mother and daughter of the sun god Ra. The word "house" was used metaphorically in ancient Egyptian culture for the mother body, which was symbolically considered a vessel, in this case "all-encompassing".
She was depicted in her oldest form dating from the 27th century BC in the form of a cow, later sometimes with a lion's head in association with her terrible aspect Sekhmet. Her solar aspect was highlighted by the solar disc between her cow horns. She was the 'sun or moon eye'. She was 'king goddess' and protector by birth. Sometimes she had two faces, one looking forward and the other looking back. In later times, Hathor increasingly acquired attributes of the throne goddess Isis and was identified with her. Isis-Hathor (the union of Hathor and Isis) was the most popular goddess in all of Egypt. This goddess was a paragon of love, beauty, joy, power, regeneration and motherhood. She was a goddess who had many associations and thus much influence; she was the ultimate queen of gods. Because of her various attributes, she could be associated with almost any goddess and appear in different ways.
Her main cult site was Dendera.
