Yoshi means "better", "best" or "happy". Characteristic of their species is that they make extensive use of their very long, sticky tongues, and can swallow almost anything, even things much larger than the Yoshi's themselves. He turns almost everything they swallow into an egg. They do not hatch this egg, of course, but use it as a weapon to throw. Yoshi's mainly eat fruit, although they also eat other things, including living things (although they do not literally consume these beings, but convert them into an egg). With their very bulky nose, they can track down buried fruit, as well as other buried objects and secrets hidden in the landscape. Although they do have teeth, they are rarely seen or used.
