Originally, glass fishing net floats were used by fishermen to keep their nets afloat.
Glass fishing net floats are said to be an invention of Norwegian merchant Christopher Faye of Bergen. The first mention dates back to 1841 and concerns a production list of ‘Hadelands Glassverk’, which touted the floats as a new product. However, there are also indications that they existed earlier.
