Pythagoras was the first true mathematician and otherwise a well-known philosopher with his own ‘school’. He lived in the sixth century BC and came from the Greek island of Samos. Around 520 BC, he moved to Croton (present-day Crotone in southern Italy), where he founded his famous philosophical school. His closest followers (who were called ‘mathematikoi’) were taught by himself. He taught, for instance, that everything is fundamentally mathematical in nature.
In this, Pythagoras and the ‘Pythagoreans’ were mainly interested in the concept of number, the concept of figure, the concept of proof. They treated these for the first time as abstract concepts. Little is known about real mathematical work by Pythagoras himself. To the Pythagoreans is attributed the proof that the sum of the angles of and triangle equals two right angles and the famous Pythagorean theorem.
