Hippocrates of Kos holding the Hippocratic Oath
Hippocrates of Kos (Ancient Greek: Ἱπποκράτης ὁ Κῷος) was a Greek physician. His name means horse tamer. He is considered the founder, the 'father' of Western medicine because he was the first to see natural rather than supernatural causes for diseases.
One of the great achievements of Hippocrates is that he separated medical science from the prevailing natural philosophical approach. He placed a strong emphasis on hygiene, for both doctor and patient, on healthy eating and drinking habits, the importance of fresh air and the natural course of processes in the body. He was one of the first in the Western world to be able to make a diagnosis based on physical symptoms and prescribe a specific therapy.
Hippocrates had a practice and a medical school on his native island of Kos, where he taught his students high professional ethics. He designed a solemn medical oath to which he obliged his pupils and which today is also taken by doctors at their graduation in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Although there are different forms of the oath, it is still called the 'Hippocrates Oath'.
