Manannán mac Lir is the son of Lir and his name means 'Mannanan, son of the sea'. His wife is Fand. He is the protector of the Blessed Isles and rules Mag Mell. He has a ship without sails that follows him when he orders it to do so, and he has a cloak that allows him to make himself invisible.
In the legendary historiography of the Isle of Man, Manannan Beg Mac-y-Lheir is considered the first king of the island, who is said to have ruled there around 440 A.D. According to the origin myth of Man, the name of the island is derived from him.
