St Florian - The patron saint of Firefighters
St Florian is the patron saint for firefighters and chimney sweeps and patron saint against fire hazards. As a Roman officer, he was responsible for the province of Noricum (present-day Austria) and for organising fire brigades. In this capacity, he is said to have saved a village from a fire with just one bucket. Thus, you come across him on signs and paintings everywhere in Linz and Enns.
During the persecutions under Emperor Diocletian, he had to execute a group of Christians, but he refused because he was a Christian himself. When he admitted this, he was first tortured and then thrown off the bridge over the river Enns with a millstone around his neck.
