From its origins in the 12th century, becoming unrecognisable by wearing a mask has been characteristic of Venetian carnival. In class-conscious Venice, the celebration developed into a social satire, where descent played no role for a while. The makers of the masks, the mascherari, had their own guild.
Venetian citizens were allowed to wear masks for almost three months of the year, from the feast of St Stephen on 26 December, until the last day of carnival.
