She is counted among the 14 helpers in distress. Based on her life story, St Barbara is considered a protector against fire and lightning and sudden death. Her help can also be invoked when storms ravage the land. Saint. Barbara is also the patron saint of several dangerous professions, in particular artillerymen, tunnellers and miners, as well as infantrymen, telegraphers, engineers, firemen, architects, farmers roofers, bricklayers, construction workers, bell founders, metal casters, blacksmiths, stonemasons, carillonists, cooks, hatters, butchers, prisoners, girls, dying, towers, fortresses, geologists, explosives clearing workers and of the inhabitants of Culemborg and Vreeswijk.
In southern Limburg, the feast of Saint Barbara, as patron saint of miners, was one of the most important holidays of the year and a day off for a long time. With the mine closure in Dutch Limburg, this came to an end.
At major tunnel boreholes in the Netherlands such as the Noord/Zuidlijn in Amsterdam and the Victory Boogie Woogie tunnel in The Hague-Rijswijk, a statue of Barbara was placed by the tunnel builders,[3] but it was not the only one.
In the Netherlands, the Basilica of Sts Agatha and Barbara, a Roman Catholic church in Oudenbosch. The church was built between 1867 and 1880 and was elevated to basilica in 1912.
It is commemorated on 4 December, but was no longer included in the Calendarium Romanum when the calendar of saints was reformed in 1969. Since 2001 Sint Barbara has been included again because of its great popularity.
