St Benedict's Crucifix
A crucifix is a symbol from the Christian tradition. It is a crucifix in which the body (corpus) of the crucified Christ is attached to a cross to emphasise the Passion of Jesus. Above the cross often hangs a sign with the letters INRI, the Latin abbreviation of Jesus of Nazareth, king of the Jews, the text Pilate had hung above the cross according to John 19:19-22.
The oldest known crucifix is on the wooden door of the Santa Sabina in Rome and dates from around 430 AD. A cross as an image did not exist just after Jesus' time.
The word is derived from the Latin cruci fix, meaning "attached to a cross".
