Durga means Invincible, She who is difficult to approach, Inaccessible.
She represents goodness, victory over evil.
She is the unified symbol of all divine forces that emerge when destructive forces threaten to take over on earth. Her task is to restore dharma (justice) to the world.
Durga is thus an incarnation of Parvati and embodies the terrifying side of the gentle Parvati. Durga came into the world not as a baby but fully grown, as an adult, ready to fight demons. Durga is usually depicted with eight, 10 or more arms and hands holding all kinds of weapons and objects. She sits on a vahana, tiger or lion called Dawon. (A vahana is usually a riding animal belonging to a particular deity). The gods all gave her a gift. Shiva manifested a trident for Her out of His own trident; a wheel (chakra) was given to Her by Vishnu; Varuna gave Her His conch shell; Kala Purusha (the God of time) gave Her a shield and sword; the Maruts gave Her bow with arrow; Yama gave Her a sceptre (this is the God of death); Brahma gave Her a water pot; Vishwakarma (the architect of the world) gave Her the axe and armour; Surya gave Her Her brilliance. Thus Durga came into possession of all kinds of symbols and weapons. Durga knows no fear and is patient. When Durga is angry, Kali emerges from Her mouth. Famous is the following story about Durga: Once upon a time, there was a demon named Mahishasura who had caused great destruction on earth and in heaven. He had taken the form of a buffalo (mahish). Goddess Durga went into battle with him and fought this demon for 9 days and nights and on the tenth day finally She celebrated victory.
