Greek Goddess Nike in Chariot Veronese Design
Nike was the Greek goddess of victory. She was the daughter of the Titan Pallas and the Styx (the Styx was the river that separated the upper world from the underworld). In contrast to the better known Greek gods, she did not have a distinct personality, which appeared in all sorts of myths, and no cult of her own. She was rather a symbol, an abstraction of victory, both military and sporting. Nike is depicted as a winged young woman. Although Nike was the daughter of two titans, she sided with the Olympic gods (Zeus) in the titanic struggle. Therefore, she was honoured to live on Olympus and sit next to Zeus, the ruler of heaven and earth.
