Poseidon with Chariot and Hippocampus statue
In Greek mythology, Poseidon is the god of water, sea, horses and earthquakes. He is one of the Olympian gods and the brother of the supreme god Zeus. The god is known for his stubborn character and for the trident he always has in his hand. He gets this trident from the Cyclopes (one-eyed giants). The Roman equivalent of the deity is Neptune.
Poseidon plays an important role in Zeus's battle with his brothers and sisters against the Titans. After defeating the Titans and conquering the power over the universe, it is obvious that Zeus, as leader, will be given all power. However, Zeus agrees that his brothers Hades and Poseidon also get an area. A lottery is held. Zeus was granted the heavens, Hades the kingdom of the dead and Poseidon the waters. The earth is ruled jointly.
The sea god also plays an important role in the fertility of the land. For this, water is also needed.
