Fortuna. Luck'. Also Fors Fortuna. Roman Goddess of fortune, fate or chance. She was sometimes depicted veiled, as a symbol of the blindness of fate. She was also depicted with the horn of plenty, the cornucopeia, or a ship's rudder. That the fate that Fortuna had in store was not always favourable is shown by titles such as Fortuna Dubia ('doubt'), Fortuna Brevis and Fortuna Mala.
She was equated with Abundantia ('abundance'). She was also identified with the Greek Tyche or Nemesis. Fortuna was a nickname for Juno as Juno Fortuna. The wheel of fortune or ship's helm was one of her symbols. She was also depicted standing on a globe, the celestial globe, which symbolised the uncertainty of fate.
