Flight of Icarus Bronzed Statue Veronese Design
Icarus is a figure from Greek mythology, known for flying with his father Daedalus.
Because Icarus and Daedalus are being held prisoner on Crete by King Minos, Daedalus devises a way to escape: he builds wings from a wooden framework, covered in feathers in an arch fixed with wax. Because the wax can melt, Daedalus warns Icarus not to fly too high and close to the sun, but not too low either, as the wings would become too heavy from the seawater. In his enthusiasm, however, Icarus is reckless; he flies too high and the wax melts anyway and he crashes into the Aegean Sea.
The story of Icarus is typical of the theme of hubris, common to Greek mythology, which punishes a person for their pride or excessive self-confidence.
