Bronzed Mythological Medusa Figurine 22cm
Medusa once had a special beauty. However, she lived, to her sorrow, in a land where the sun never shone. Medusa begged Athena to let her leave for sunnier climes. Athena refused, fearing that people would praise Medusa for her beauty instead of her.
In another version of the myth, Medusa is said to have incurred the wrath of Athena because Poseidon had raped her in Athena's temple. The enraged Athena took her revenge by turning Medusa's beautiful hair into a bunch of writhing snakes. Furthermore, anyone who looked Medusa in the face would turn to stone on the spot. Since then, her task has been to turn as many people as possible to stone. Her sisters begged Athena to change her back. They said, "Let us be like her again!", and so it happened, for Pallas Athene changed them too into Gorgons, and also gave them eternal life.
Eventually she was killed and beheaded by the hero Perseus, who was assisted in this by Athena, among others. From her blood the winged horse Pegasus and the giant Chrysaor were born (as a result of an earlier love with Poseidon). With the head, Perseus petrified a sea monster and an entire army, and the king ordered him to kill Medusa. Finally, her head was given by Perseus to Athena, who placed it on her shield to petrify enemies.
