Minotaur with Axe Bronzed Statue Veronese Design
The Minotaur is a figure from Greek mythology. He is a creature with the head and tail of a bull but the body of a man.
Minos, the king of Crete, after whom the Minoan civilisation was named, had a dispute with his brothers about who was the rightful king. Minos prayed to the sea god Poseidon for a sign that he was the rightful king. Poseidon sent a white bull as a sign of kingship, on condition that the bull would be sacrificed immediately. Minos did not keep his promise, so Poseidon retaliated by making Minos' wife Pasiphaë fall in love with the bull. The Athenian architect Daedalus then built a wooden hollow cow in which Pasiphaë could lie down and have intercourse with the bull. After the bull had fertilised her, the Minotaur was born.
