A sextant is a navigational instrument used to measure the vertical angle between a celestial body and the horizon.
Two different people independently invented the sextant around 1730: John Hadley (1682-1744), an English mathematician, and Thomas Godfrey (1704-1749), an American inventor.
The name sextant indicates that the protractor of this instrument covers one sixth of a circle, i.e. 60°.
Because mirrors are used, the scale on the curved edge of a sextant is divided into 120 degrees. Using the vernier attached to the movable arm, the angle between the horizon and (edge of) a celestial body can be determined.
