Briefly, the story is about a princess called Psyche, who was so beautiful that, when the time came for her to marry, no candidates could be found - because everyone worshipped her from afar and believed she was the appearance on earth of the goddess of Love. While this attitude saddened and embarrassed the young princess, Aphrodite, the true goddess of Beauty and Love, became furious. She enjoined her son, the young and joy-loving Eros, to enchant Psyche, causing her to fall in love with some vile creature and thereby causing her to suffer so much that her beauty would disappear. Eros obediently went to earth, but the moment he saw the girl, his heart was filled with love.
