Craniometry is the study of the shape, dimensions and interrelationships of the bones of the human skull.
Craniometry was applied to support anthropological and ethnological research such as cultural anthropology. It was thought that from the measurements and bumps on the skull one could make statements about the person (phrenology). Scientists such as the Frenchman Paul Broca and the Englishman Francis Galton carried out cranial measurements as a precursor to the intelligence test: the larger the skull, the more intelligent the person.
In the Third Reich, craniology was used to support theories about the origin of the Nordic race. In 1938, for example, Heinrich Himmler sent a team led by anthropologist Bruno Berger to Tibet to ‘prove’ through skull measurements, that Europeans were supposedly descended from Tibetans.
The method still plays a role within archaeology in determining evolutionary developments of humans. It can also be a tool in animal species research.
