Chronos is the personification of time in Greek mythology. He is often confused with the Titan Cronus, father of the supreme god Zeus.
According to a creation story from so-called orphism (a religious and philosophical movement that emerged in ancient Greece around the sixth century BC), Chronos created himself from the void and entered into a union with the snake-like goddess Ananke (necessity or destiny). Together, they then enveloped a cosmic egg, from which the first god was born: Phanes. This neuter deity, who took the guise of Eos (dawn) among others, is said to have hereafter ordered the cosmos, only to cede his place to his daughter Nyx, the primordial goddess of night.
After this creation, Chronos and Ananka circled around the cosmos where they symbolised the movement of the sky and the passage of time.
