The term Black Madonna or Black Virgin usually refers to images or paintings in Western Christianity of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus , in which both figures are depicted with dark skin. Examples of the Black Madonna can be found in both Catholic and Orthodox countries .
The oldest figures of black Madonnas date back to the Romanesque period. The remarkable thing is that this figure can be found in many places almost simultaneously. It is possible that these original black madonnas were first brought by the Knights Templar from the Middle East to Western Europe, especially to France. They are still found mainly in central France (Auvergne), in Provence and in the Pyrenees. Unlike the Italian black madonnas, the French ones are very well researched, which is why most of the literature on them is written in French.
